304 vs 316 stainless steel: What's the difference?
The short answer:
The main difference is corrosion resistance. 316 stainless steel contains molybdenum, which makes it much more resistant to rust and saltwater corrosion compared to 304.
Detailed Comparison:
Stainless Steel (Standard Choice):
★ Best for: Inland areas, dry environments, and standard residential use.
★Feature: Excellent durability and cost-effective. It is the industry standard for most flagpoles not located near the ocean.
Stainless Steel (Marine Grade):
◆ Best for: Coastal areas, salty environments, or places with high humidity/pollution.
◆ Feature: Superior resistance to chlorides (salt) and harsh chemicals. It prevents "tea staining" (surface rust) better than 304.
Which one should you choose?
If your project is located within 5-10 miles of the coast, we highly recommend upgrading to 316 Marine Grade to ensure longevity. For inland projects, 304 is a perfect, durable choice.
